SEASON HIGHS
The Mountain Lions are coming off a 77-64 win over Notre Dame Saturday afternoon as they established season highs in points (77), rebounds (48) and field-goal percentage (46.8). Concord also tied its season best in assists with 13, previously set against Bluefield State and West Virginia State. Though CU erupted for 26 points in the first quarter, Concord was steady throughout as it scored at least 15 points in each quarter and shot 40 percent or better from the field in three of the four periods. CU's most efficient quarter was in the third when it posted 52.9 percent (9-for-17) from the field.
RIPPING REBOUNDS
Part of Concord's success against Notre Dame can be attributed to the one-sided rebounding margin that the Mountain Lions had. CU nearly doubled up the Falcons on the glass, 48-25. The +23 margin was the best for the Maroon and Gray since Concord posted a +24 (49-25) advantage in a win at Davis & Elkins in January. The rebounding was evenly distributed as senior forward
Lauryn Avery, graduate forward
Alexis Phillips and freshman forward
Abbie Smith all had 10 rebounds. Avery notched a season best in boards. Phillips had her second consecutive game with double-digit rebounds, and her third of the season. Meanwhile, Smith tallied her second straight double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds). CU now has the second-best rebounding margin in the MEC (+4.9) while Fairmont State is 11
th (-8.4).
BALANCE BEAM
The Mountain Lions had five players finish in double figures, including two players—juniors guards
Nakaila Gray and
Maddie Ratcliff—come off the bench to score double digits. Ratcliff led all CU scorers with 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Gray finished two points off her career high and set a season high with 12 points. Smith matched Gray, and senior guard
Jazz Blankenship and graduate guard
Maggie Guynn each finished with 10 points. It was the first time this season Concord had five players with 10 or more points, and the first time with two players netting 10 or more points off the bench since Blankenship and Ratcliff had 17 and 11 points, respectively, in a February 2021 win over Alderson Broaddus. SCORING FRENZY
In the last five games and six of the last seven contests between Concord and Fairmont State one or both teams have gotten to 80 points. In three straight games, both have posted 80 points. CU shook off a slow start and scored 79 points over the final three quarters in an 89-81 February victory. Phillips scored a career-best 16 points in 18 minutes. Junior guard
Jaisah Smith used a 7-for-7 effort at the foul line to net 19 points. In last December's meeting, a career-high 27 points from J. Smith weren't enough as FSU won 93-84. Blankenship hit four three-pointers as part of her 15 points. Fairmont State averages the third-most points in the MEC (84.7) while CU ranks third in the MEC in scoring defense (69.9). Two of the last five games between Concord and FSU have gone to overtime, including an 81-74 win for CU at home in December 2019.
BALL CONTROL
Hanging onto the ball will be key in Tuesday's matchup as both teams rank in the top five in the league in steals per game. Fairmont State is getting 11.1 steals per game, third, while Concord records 9.1 steals per contest, fifth in the MEC. Both teams rely on a host of players to come up with thefts. FSU's Katy Darnell is 14
th in the MEC in steals (1.7) while Concord's Gray is 21
st (1.6). The Mountain Lions have posted at least eight steals in all but one game this season. Avery and freshman guard
Hannah Perdue helped Concord come up with 10 steals versus Notre Dame. Avery tied her career with three takeaways with Perdue pitching in two steals.
BEST OF THE BEST
Tuesday's contest features the MEC's active career leading scorer as well as the league leader in scoring this year. Guynn recently went over 1,300 career points and sit at 1,314, and she is the only player in the MEC that has 1,000 career points. Guynn is averaging 12.8 points per game in seven contests versus Fairmont State. She has scored in double figures in all but one. FSU's Alyssa DeAngelo averages 22.9 points per game which is 0.6 better than Arriana Manzay of West Liberty. After a 14-point game to start the season, the junior guard has scored 20 or more points in five of the last six games, including a 34-point output versus Davis & Elkins and a 26-point eruption versus nationally-ranked Charleston.
