Best of 2022: #6 Men's Basketball, Women's Soccer Collect Nationally-Ranked Wins

ATHENS, W.Va. – Over the last 365 days, Concord University Athletics has enjoyed several career achievements, memorable wins and award-winning moments.

From December 22 through New Year's Eve, the Concord University Sports Information Department will travel back in time to relive the top 10 moments and storylines of the 2022 sports year on The Campus Beautiful.

The past calendar year saw two different Concord teams pick up wins over nationally-ranked teams at home: women's soccer and men's basketball.

The CU women's soccer team began the 2022 campaign ranked among the best in Division II. However, entering the October 5 contest against 17th-rated Frostburg State, the Mountain Lions had a record of just 5-4-1. That afternoon, Concord made the most of its chances as it netted three goals on just five shots on target and nine total.

Midfielder Michelle Brogden broke the ice with a goal in the 10th minute on an assist from forward Rachel Bell. From there, Bell did the rest of the scoring. The Brampton, England native doubled the CU lead in the 54th minute. Frostburg State answered in the 59th minute with a goal.

But, Concord withstood 17 total shots and seven on target from the Bobcats to secure a 3-1 win after Bell provided an insurance goal in the 83rd minute. The loss was the first of the season for Frostburg State after entering the contest with a 10-0-0 record.

In what the was the final home event of 2022, Concord men's basketball put on a show versus 19th-ranked Fairmont State inside the Carter Center December 6.

CU jumped out to a 29-13 lead through 12 minutes, and never trailed in the win.

The Mountain Lions did have to survive a late rally from Fairmont State as CU led by 11 points, 82-71, with under four minutes remaining before holding off the Fighting Falcons by three points, 86-83. Two free throws from guard Jordan Wooden gave CU a five-point lead with four seconds remaining.

The three-point shot and the Concord bench was pivotal in the win. Concord canned 12 three-pointers on just 18 attempts to set a single-game program record for three-point percentage (66.7). Guard JJ Harper scored 20 points off the bench while forward Amare Smith hit four three-pointers in a reserve role for part of his 18 points. Guard Ethan Heller also connected on four triples as he scored 17 points.
