INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team dropped a Mountain East Conference contest 95-70 to West Virginia State Tuesday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center.
West Virginia State (3-1, 1-1 MEC) scored 27 points in the second quarter as it pulled away from the Mountain Lions (1-4, 0-2 MEC) and held a 44-33 advantage at halftime.
CU worked the deficit back under 10 points after two free throws from freshman forward
Abbie Smith trimmed the margin to 47-39 at the 7:36 mark of the third. However, WVSU went on a 16-6 run over the next four minutes to open up a 63-45 lead.
Still trailing by 15 points, junior guard
Nakaila Gray hit a three-pointer ahead of the third-quarter buzzer to get Concord within 68-56 after 30 minutes. A bucket from graduate guard
Maggie Guynn pushed Concord to within 14 points, 73-59, but it was as close as the Mountain Lions got for the remaining 6:26 of the game.
Concord took a brief 14-13 lead at the 1:36 mark of the first quarter after a three-point play from junior guard
Maddie Ratcliff. But the Yellow Jackets scored the final four points of the opening period.
Guynn finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. Smith went for 10 points and nine rebounds. Gray added nine points off the bench while junior guard
Jaisah Smith chipped eight points and six rebounds.
CU welcomes non-conference foe UVa.-Wise to the Carter Center 5:30 p.m. Monday.
