PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team lost 68-57 to Alderson Broaddus Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference contest inside Rex Pyles Arena.
The Mountain Lions (1-5, 0-3 MEC) were able to erase a six-point third quarter deficit as they started the fourth on a 10-4 run to take a 51-50 advantage after a layup from junior guard
Jaisah Smith at the 7:25 mark of the period.
However, ABU (2-5, 1-2 MEC) went on an 8-0 run to take its largest lead of the game—to that point—with 5:46 remaining. Consecutive buckets from freshman forward
Abbie Smith on the next two trips down the floor cut the deficit to 58-55 with 5:03 left, but it was as close as Concord would get.
Alderson Broaddus led after one quarter, 14-12. CU's defense buckled down though as it held the Battlers to three points over the next four minutes to take a 20-17 edge. Offense was at a premium in the second quarter as Concord held a 23-22 edge at halftime.
Behind an efficient shooting night, 7-of-11, A. Smith recorded her second career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. J. Smith added 14 points off the bench. Senior guard
Jazz Blankenship connected on three three-pointers as part of her 13 points.
Graduate forward
Alexis Phillips tied her career with 12 rebounds to go with six points.
The Mountain Lions outrebounded the Battlers, 44-38.
CU returns to the Carter Center to host Notre Dame 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
