Concord Downed by Charleston

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team fell in three sets to Charleston, 25-16, 25-14, 25-15, Tuesday night at the Carter Center in a Mountain East Conference match.

Set 1
UC (29-3, 14-1 MEC) jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, but Concord (7-24, 1-14 MEC) stayed within the Golden Eagles as it trailed 17-13 after a kill from junior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant. However, Charleston close on an 8-2 run.

Set 2
A kill from sophomore outside hitter Gracie Brackney got the Mountain Lions within 9-7. A 9-2 run from the Golden Eagles pushed the Charleston lead to 18-9. A kill form senior middle hitter Amber Hall trimmed the deficit to eight on the next points, but CU was never able to get any closer.

Set 3
Concord rallied from an early 6-2 deficit as consecutive Charleston attack errors tied the score at 11-11. During the 9-5 run, sophomore outside hitter Hannah Steele contributed three of team-high 12 kills. The Golden Eagles fended off the CU run by scoring five of the next six points to open up a 16-12 edge. A kill from Hall reduced the deficit to 17-14, but Concord was unable to pull any closer.

Match Stats
Brackney and Hall each had seven kills while Steele hit .214 for the match. Freshman setter Kenzee Chaffin finished with 28 assists and nine digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Kaylee Spees tallied 12 digs.

CU finishes the regular season at Glenville State 7:00 p.m. Friday.
