Concord Turned Away by West Virginia Wesleyan

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team was edged 1-0 by West Virginia Wesleyan in a Mountain East Conference game at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex Sunday afternoon.

The game's lone goal came in the 62nd minute as WVWC (6-3-3, 4-3-3 MEC) held off the Mountain Lions (2-8-2, 1-8-1 MEC) down the stretch of the game.

Freshman goalkeeper Keegan Grant made a pair of sprawling saves in the 22nd and 39th minutes, respectively, to keep the game scoreless at halftime.

Right before the Wesleyan goal, freshman forward Louis Cole had a look at goal in the 59th minute, but was denied. CU pressured the Bobcats right after the score as freshman midfielder Jonas Soderlund sent a shot high of the goal in the 65th minute.

Junior midfielder Ricardo Chinea-Pegler had a shot got wide in the 72nd minute. After a foul on West Virginia Wesleyan, sophomore defender Esteban Correa had a look at goal in the 82nd minute. However, the attempt was wide right.

WVWC held a 13-9 edge in total shots while Wesleyan was also four better in shots on goal (7-3). The Bobcats took four corner kicks to Concord's three.

Grant stopped six shots in all. Chinea-Pegler took a team-high three shots. Cole tallied two shots off the bench.

The Mountain Lions travel to face nationally-ranked Davis & Elkins 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
