BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team was edged 1-0 by West Virginia Wesleyan in a Mountain East Conference game at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex Sunday afternoon.
The game's lone goal came in the 62
nd minute as WVWC (6-3-3, 4-3-3 MEC) held off the Mountain Lions (2-8-2, 1-8-1 MEC) down the stretch of the game.
Freshman goalkeeper
Keegan Grant made a pair of sprawling saves in the 22
nd and 39
th minutes, respectively, to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
Right before the Wesleyan goal, freshman forward
Louis Cole had a look at goal in the 59
th minute, but was denied. CU pressured the Bobcats right after the score as freshman midfielder
Jonas Soderlund sent a shot high of the goal in the 65
th minute.
Junior midfielder
Ricardo Chinea-Pegler had a shot got wide in the 72
nd minute. After a foul on West Virginia Wesleyan, sophomore defender
Esteban Correa had a look at goal in the 82
nd minute. However, the attempt was wide right.
WVWC held a 13-9 edge in total shots while Wesleyan was also four better in shots on goal (7-3). The Bobcats took four corner kicks to Concord's three.
Grant stopped six shots in all. Chinea-Pegler took a team-high three shots. Cole tallied two shots off the bench.
The Mountain Lions travel to face nationally-ranked Davis & Elkins 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
