WHEELING, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team outgunned Wheeling, 6-3, Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference contest at Bishop Schmitt Field.
Concord (10-4-1, 8-4-1 MEC) scored twice in the first 10 minutes on goals by fifth-year senior forward
Leah Foster and senior midfielder
Courtney Smith to go up 2-0 on the Cardinals (5-9-1, 5-7-1 MEC).
Wheeling was unfazed as it scored twice just over four minutes apart in the later stages of the first half to tie the game at 2-2 in the 37
th minute. However, just 75 seconds after WU knotted the game, Smith answered with her second goal of the season.
The 3-2 lead stood up until the 73
rd minute when senior midfielder
Michelle Brogden connected on her seventh goal of the season—a shot from just inside the top of the 18-yard box. The Cardinals had a response to get the deficit back to one goal 39 seconds after the Brogden score.
But, the Mountain Lions stayed aggressive as sophomore forward
Jayme Millard scored in the 80
th minute, and Foster added her second goal of the night—her sixth in the last two games—in the 83
rd minute.
All six goals were unassisted.
CU tallied 26 shots on the night with 14 coming on goal. Millard had four shots on goal while Brogden and Foster each added three.
Fifth-year senior goalkeeper
Leah Marsh recorded six saves. '
Concord seeks its sixth straight win when it visits Alderson Broaddus 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
