ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team was downed by West Virginia State in three sets Tuesday night in a Mountain East Conference match at the Walker Convocation Center.
The set scores were 25-9, 25-15, 25-11.
After losing the first set by 16 points, the Mountain Lions (6-20, 0-10 MEC) weren't deterred as they jumped out to a 9-6 lead in the middle game on West Virginia State (21-3, 8-2 MEC) after a kill from sophomore outside hitter
Hannah Steele and a WVSU error. CU still had a 10-8 lead following a kill from junior hitter
Kyndra Pilant.
However, West Virginia State went on a 10-1 run to take command of the set.
In the third set, Concord was within two points of WVSU, 6-4, after a kill from freshman right side/setter
Logan Newberry. But, the Yellow Jackets were able to score six of the next seven points to take a comfortable lead in the set.
Pilant and Steele each had five kills. Freshman setter
Kenzee Chaffin handed out 14 assists. Steele (eight) and Pilant (six) combined for 14 digs.
After three matches on the road, Concord returns home to face Alderson Broaddus 7:00 p.m. Friday.
