ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team was unable to hang onto a 2-1 lead as it fell in five sets to Alderson Broaddus, 23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 17-25, 16-18, Friday night in a Mountain East Conference match at the Carter Center.
Set 1
Concord (6-21, 0-11 MEC) jumped out 13-4 on the Battlers (7-14, 1-10 MEC) to begin the contest. However, AB had an answer as it clawed to within 15-12. The Mountain Lions withstood the surge to open up back a 22-16 advantage after a service ace by sophomore defensive specialist
Kaylee Spees. Alderson Broaddus held CU to one point over the remainder of the game to go up 1-0.
Set 2
The Maroon and Gray started the set on a 7-1 spurt and never looked back. Concord maintained at least a five-point lead throughout the set as it finished the game on a 5-1 run. Junior middle hitter
Kyndra Pilant had three kills during the ending spurt.
Set 3
Facing a potential 2-1 deficit in the match, the Mountain Lions surged at the end of the game to take a set lead. Down 21-18, CU used a 7-0 run to seal the third game. Senior middle hitter
Amber Hall supplied two kills while freshman right side
Maddie Bohan added a service ace.
Set 4
The momentum from the third game did not carry over to the fourth set. With the set tied at 9-9, Alderson Broaddus went on a 6-0 scoring spurt to gain the separation it needed to force a decisive fifth set.
Set 5
The teams traded the first 22 points with neither leading by more than two. Down 12-11, the Mountain Lions ripped off three consecutive points—all on kills. Freshman setter
Kenzee Chaffin was responsible for two of the kills. AB got the next point to get within 14-13, and a CU error tied the set at 14-14. A kill from sophomore outside hitter
Hannah Steele pushed Concord back ahead 15-14. Alderson Broaddus fought off another match point, and was able to outlast CU.
Match Stats
Chaffin recorded a double-double of 45 assists and 13 digs while adding eight kills. Steele netted 17 kills. Halls went for 16 kills and hit .333 in the match. Spees finished with a season-best 21 digs which was one off her career high.
