Concord Erupts for Seven Goals in Shutout Win of West Liberty

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team piled up a season-high seven goals on its way to a 7-0 win over West Liberty Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex.

After a 90-minute lightning delay to begin the game, Concord (9-4-1, 7-4-1 MEC) came out fast as fifth-year senior forward Leah Foster buried her first of four goals on the day in the ninth minute. A two-man game between senior midfielder Michelle Brogden and sophomore forward Jayme Millard was the result for a second goal in the 27th minute as Brogden scored.

Foster scored off a corner kick in the 38th minute to push the lead to 3-0 at halftime. Foster netted her third goal of the game in the 64th minute on a cross into the penalty from sophomore midfielder Leah Fleming. Brogden finished off her brace with a goal in the 67th minute on senior forward Rachel Bell and senior midfielder Courtney Smith's second assist of the day.

Foster concluded her day with a goal—this time unassisted—just 46 seconds after Brogden's score.

Smith tallied her third assist of the contest with a pass to senior midfielder Ellie Hawcroft in the 79th minute.

Foster tied the single-game program record for goals as she matched the total of Bell form 2019 against Glenville State and Lesley Ashford versus West Virginia Wesleyan in 2000. Smith's three assists matched the single-game program record as she tied a record that is held by herself versus Glenville State in April 2021, Brogden at Wheeling in 2019 and Foster versus Chowan last season.

Brogden had her second career two-goal game on Sunday afternoon. Over the last four games, Bell has 12 points.

CU's back line was stout on Sunday as it held West Liberty (4-9-1, 3-8-1 MEC) to two shots. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Leah Marsh saved a first-half attempt. Meanwhile, the Mountain Lions got off 26 shots with 15 on goal.

Concord puts its four-game winning streak on the line at Wheeling 7:00 p.m. Wednesdya.
