Concord Holds Down Davis & Elkins for 4-3 Win

ELKINS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team jumped out on Davis & Elkins 4-0 before hanging on for a 4-3 victory Wednesday night in Mountain East Conference action at Nuttall Field.

The Mountain Lions (8-4-1, 6-4-1 MEC) used two goals from sophomore forward Jayme Millard in the first 15 minutes to open up a 2-0 lead. Millard tallied her first goal in the sixth minute on an assist from senior midfielder Courtney Smith.

Seven minutes later, a cross came in the box from right to left from senior forward Rachel Bell where Millard was able to bury her eighth goal of the season to extend the advantage.

The two-goal lead held up until the 50th minute when Bell took a pass from Millard and scored her third goal of the season. The Brampton, England native needed less than three minutes to record her second two-goal game in the last three contests.

Davis & Elkins (6-5-1, 5-5-1 MEC) stormed back with goals in the 73rd and 76th minutes to cut the CU lead in half, and an 86th minute shot found the back of the net for the Senators. The Mountain Lions were able, however, to hold the one-goal lead over the last four minutes to secure their third straight win.

The two goals broke a small five-game scoring drought for Millard. Smith dished out her 24th career assist on Millard's first goal.

Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Leah Marsh racked up four saves.

CU was outshot 16-13 in the game, but had more shots on goal than Davis & Elkins, 10-7. Millard took six shots in the game while Bell added four shots.

The Mountain Lions host West Liberty 1:00 p.m. Sunday at the YMCA Cline Complex in Beckley for Senior Day.
