Five Named USTFCCA All-Academic, Concord Lauded as All-Academic Team

NEW ORLEANS – The Concord University men's cross country team landed five athletes on the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team, the organization released Thursday afternoon.

As a squad, the men's cross country team was honored was a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.

In order to qualify for All-Academic distinction, teams must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period and compile a team score at their respective regional championship meet, among other qualifiers.

Head coach Mike Cox's group combined to sport a cumulative GPA of 3.08. The season was a success for CU as it qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championship for just the second time in program history.

Individually, sophomore Caleb Hatcher, fifth-year senior Samuel Haynes, senior Issac Prather, sophomore Preston Prather and freshman Logan Zuchelli were lauded as USTFCCCA All-Academic Athletes.

In order to qualify for All-Academic distinction, student athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and finish in the top-30 percent of their respective regional championship meet, among other qualifiers.

Hatcher was a key piece to Concord's journey to the national championship race. He was voted All-Mountain East Conference Second Team and finished 46th at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship. In the classroom, he carried a GPA of 3.51 as a studio art major.

Haynes, in his first semester of graduate school, had a perfect 4.0 GPA in health promotion. The Cana, Virginia native was 64th at the regional championship.

Issac Prather was the Atlantic Regional Runner of the Year after he took victories at the MEC and Atlantic Regional Championships. He also earned All-American honors. As an accomplished business administration major, Prather has a 3.47 GPA. His brother, Preston, sports a GPA slightly higher, 3.48, also in business administration. P. Prather just missed all-region honors with a 28th-place finish, but he earned All-MEC this fall.

Zuchelli was the MEC Freshman of the Year and also earned All-Atlantic Region honors after coming through in 13th at the Atlantic Regional Championship. Zuchelli netted a GPA of 3.30 in his first semester at Concord.
