Concord Comes Up Short Against Charleston

Athens, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team fell to Charleston, 81-67, Wednesday Night in a Mountain East Conference game held at the Carter Center.

The loss snaps a 24-game home winning streak for the Mountain Lions (12-5, 7-4 MEC).

Charleston (7-5, 5-3 MEC) took an early lead in the first half, leading by 10 for most of the first quarter. CU trailed 37-33 going into halftime.

The Mountain Lions chipped away at the UC lead in the third quarter, but still trailed by eight with six minutes left in the period. Fifth-year senior Riley Fitzwater knocked down a jumper and a pair of layups. Redshirt junior forward Alexis Phillips tallied two layups and a pair of free throws. Concord rattled off 13-5 run to tie the game at 50-50. Fitzwater, senior guard Maggie Guynn, and Phillips combined for all 13 points.

Two free throws from Guynn with 1:40 remaining in the quarter gave the Mountain Lions their first lead of the night, 52-50. CU led 54-53 at the end of the quarter.

The Mountains shot 66.7 percent from the field and knocked down nine of their 10 free throws in the third quarter.

Charleston regained the lead, 57-56 with 8:51 remaining in the fourth and never looked back, going on 16-4 run.

Fitzwater finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. Phillips finished with a season-high 14 points and two blocks. Guynn scored 11 of her 13 points at the foul line, only missing once at the charity stripe. Sophomore guard Maddie Ratcliff gave Concord a fourth double-figure score with 10 points.

Led by Guynn, Concord hit 22-of-28 foul shots with Phillips going a perfect 6-of-6.

Concord hopes to rebound against Mountain East Conference foe Glenville State at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Carter Center.
