Concord Edged by West Liberty

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team fell 2-0 to West Liberty Wednesday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex.

Concord (0-3, 0-2 MEC) and West Liberty (2-1, 1-1 MEC) stalemated each other in the first 20 minutes as the first shot of the game for either side did not come until the 24th minute when freshman defender Esteban Correa fired a shot over the goal.

Eight minutes later, sophomore midfielder Juan Farinella ripped a shot that appeared to be heading for a goal until WLU goalkeeper Noah Underwood tipped it over the cross bar. Despite the surge from the Mountain Lions, West Liberty's counter attack in the 36th minute allowed it to score late in the first half.

Like the first half, both teams searched for offense in the early part of the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Monro saved a shot in the 61st minute, but was unable to keep a shot out of the back of the net in the 68th minute as the Hilltoppers doubled their lead.

Underwood denied two great chances by Concord in the 73rd minute and again in the 80th minute as he stonewalled sophomore midfielder Ricardo Chinea-Pegler and freshman forward Francisco Salcedo to keep CU off the scoreboard.

Chinea-Pegler had another shot on target turned aside in the 82nd minute. The final chance of the game for the Mountain Lions came in the 89th minute when senior defender Adrian Cabello had his shot saved.

West Liberty held a 13-12 edge in total shotsa while each team had six shots on goal. Chinea-Pegler, Farinella and junior midfielder Michael Shelor each had two shots on goal. Monro made four saves.

The Mountain Lions head on the road to face Davis & Elkins 7:00 p.m. Sunday.
