BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team fell 2-0 to West Liberty Wednesday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex.
Concord (0-3, 0-2 MEC) and West Liberty (2-1, 1-1 MEC) stalemated each other in the first 20 minutes as the first shot of the game for either side did not come until the 24
th minute when freshman defender
Esteban Correa fired a shot over the goal.
Eight minutes later, sophomore midfielder
Juan Farinella ripped a shot that appeared to be heading for a goal until WLU goalkeeper Noah Underwood tipped it over the cross bar. Despite the surge from the Mountain Lions, West Liberty's counter attack in the 36
th minute allowed it to score late in the first half.
Like the first half, both teams searched for offense in the early part of the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper
Sean Monro saved a shot in the 61
st minute, but was unable to keep a shot out of the back of the net in the 68
th minute as the Hilltoppers doubled their lead.
Underwood denied two great chances by Concord in the 73
rd minute and again in the 80
th minute as he stonewalled sophomore midfielder
Ricardo Chinea-Pegler and freshman forward
Francisco Salcedo to keep CU off the scoreboard.
Chinea-Pegler had another shot on target turned aside in the 82
nd minute. The final chance of the game for the Mountain Lions came in the 89
th minute when senior defender
Adrian Cabello had his shot saved.
West Liberty held a 13-12 edge in total shotsa while each team had six shots on goal. Chinea-Pegler, Farinella and junior midfielder
Michael Shelor each had two shots on goal. Monro made four saves.
The Mountain Lions head on the road to face Davis & Elkins 7:00 p.m. Sunday.
