Concord Outdueled at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team fell in a three-set match at West Virginia State Tuesday night in the Mountain East Conference opener for both teams.

WVSU (10-2, 1-0 MEC) won the match 25-18, 25-9, 25-11.

Set 1
Concord (2-6, 0-1 MEC) came strong out of the gate with West Virginia State, the team picked to win the MEC South in the preseason. After a kill from senior middle hitter Sheridan Herron, the Mountain Lions took a 12-11 lead. And the set remained tied at 14-14 after back-to-back kills from junior middle hitter Amber Hall and freshman outside hitter Hannah Steele. However, the Yellow Jackets scored six of the next seven points to go up 20-15 on their way to a game one win.

Set 2
A kill by Herron cut CU's deficit to 8-5 in the middle set, but an 11-0 run by West Virginia State allowed the Yellow Jackets to go up 2-0.

Set 3
Like the second game, the Mountain Lions trimmed the deficit to three points, 8-5, but WVSU pulled away in the third game.

Match Stats
Hall had a team-best nine kills. Senior setter Imani Rodgers just missed her third double-double of the season with 18 assists and eight digs. Senior defensive specialist Kelli Ellison came up two digs shy of her career high as she notched 22 digs.

The Mountain Lions visit Salem 7:00 p.m. Thursday for a non-conference tilt.
