SALEM, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team downed Salem in four sets, 25-14, 23-25, 25-10, 25-14, Thursday night in non-conference action at Davis Gymnasium in a non-conference match.
The Mountain Lions improve to 3-6 this season while Salem drops to 2-13.
Set 1
With a narrow 6-5 edge in the opening game, CU was able to reel off eight of the next nine points to open up a 14-6 edge. Senior setter
Imani Rodgers had two kills during the spurt. The Tigers got back to within 14-8, but never any closer as Concord opened up an 18-8 lead thanks in part to back-to-back service aces from Rodgers.
Set 2
Neither team led by more than two points until Salem took a 19-16 lead, and the Tigers stretched the advantage out to 21-17. The Mountain Lions came back to get within 23-22 after a kill from junior middle hitter
Amber Hall, but was never able to tie or take the lead late as SU evened the match.
Set 3
Concord started the third set strong as it opened up a 10-1 advantage and never looked back. Freshman outside hitter
Hannah Steele had three kills in the early stages. Salem would only get as close as 16-8 before Hall pitched in two kills and senior right side
Peyton Wiseman had a kill to run the lead up to 11 points, 19-8.
Set 4
The Mountain Lions were able to pull away late in the fourth set to secure the match win. Only up 19-17, Steele scored two of the next three points with sophomore right side
Csayjah Whitelow contributing a kill as well. Up by five, Concord only allowed Salem to score once more on the night.
Match Stats
Steele recorded her second double-double of the season with 17 kills and 14 digs as she hit .364 on the night. Hall chipped in 10 kills. Senior defensive specialist
Kelli Ellison had a career-best 33 digs. Rodgers notched 33 assists to go with five kills, five digs and four service aces.
CU visits Mountain East Conference foe West Virginia Wesleyan 7:00 p.m. Friday.
