BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team topped Charleston, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex.
The Mountain Lions (7-0, 5-0 MEC) remained unbeaten on the season as they notched a goal in each half.
Both teams got off early shots including fifth-year senior midfielder
Yasmin Mosby having back-to-back chances in the 20
th and 21
st minutes, but it wasn't until the 31
st minute that Concord would crack the deadlock.
After a Charleston (4-2, 3-1 MEC) foul inside the CU attacking zone, junior midfielder
Michelle Brogden chipped the free kick near the left side of the seven-yard box where senior forward
Leah Foster roofed her fifth goal of the season.
Concord survived a Golden Eagles' wave early in the second half as UC recorded the first five shots of the second half—all in the first 10 minutes. The surge by Charleston included the CU defense blocking away two attempts and senior goalkeeper
Leah Marsh saving a third shot.
In the 72
nd minute, Foster was unable to cash in on a breakaway, but two minutes later Foster was in the middle of the Concord scoring.
Brogden and Foster played a 1-2 combination in the midfield before Brogden slid a pass to Mosby who got behind the defense and raced in for her 10
th goal of 2021.
Marsh was forced into one more save in the final 15 minutes to preserve a shutout.
The Mountain Lions held a 15-13 edge in shots and also had a two-shot advantage on shots on target (7-5). Both teams had five corner kicks in the game.
Foster accounted for nine shots on the afternoon.
Concord who is ranked 20
th in Division II travels to Glenville State 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
