Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Concord Edged by Shaw

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team came up short against Shaw Sunday evening in a Mountain East Conference game at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex.

CU (0-7) outshot the Bears (2-3), 14-12, in the game, but a goal in the 39th minute from Shaw was the difference in the contest.

Shaw was first to get on the board after a rebound on an initial shot attempt in the 24th minute.

However, the Mountain Lions responded in the 32nd minute. Junior midfielder Michael Shelor took a pass down the right flank from freshman defender Ted Penn and buried his first goal of the season from just side the penalty area.

Seven minutes later SU came back with a goal. A free kick on the edge of the penalty box found the bottom left hand corner of the goal to give the Bears a 2-1 edge at halftime.

Down a goal, the Mountain Lions had plenty of chances in the second half. Senior defender Adrian Cabello got a look from about 20 yards away that rang off the left post in the 55th minute. Sophomore defender Valentin Fernandez had another shot saved, a low line drive attempt, in the 68th minute.

Shelor had a bid for a two-goal game go wide left in the 87th minute. The final CU attempt of the game came from senior midfielder Lucas Asato just a minute after the Shelor shot.

Shelor posted four shots while Cabello added three. Sophomore forward Piyo Debasey came off the bench to add two shots for the contest.

Concord returns to action 2:00 p.m. next Sunday at Alderson-Broaddus.
