BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team came up short against Shaw Sunday evening in a Mountain East Conference game at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex.
CU (0-7) outshot the Bears (2-3), 14-12, in the game, but a goal in the 39
th minute from Shaw was the difference in the contest.
Shaw was first to get on the board after a rebound on an initial shot attempt in the 24
th minute.
However, the Mountain Lions responded in the 32
nd minute. Junior midfielder
Michael Shelor took a pass down the right flank from freshman defender
Ted Penn and buried his first goal of the season from just side the penalty area.
Seven minutes later SU came back with a goal. A free kick on the edge of the penalty box found the bottom left hand corner of the goal to give the Bears a 2-1 edge at halftime.
Down a goal, the Mountain Lions had plenty of chances in the second half. Senior defender
Adrian Cabello got a look from about 20 yards away that rang off the left post in the 55
th minute. Sophomore defender
Valentin Fernandez had another shot saved, a low line drive attempt, in the 68
th minute.
Shelor had a bid for a two-goal game go wide left in the 87
th minute. The final CU attempt of the game came from senior midfielder
Lucas Asato just a minute after the Shelor shot.
Shelor posted four shots while Cabello added three. Sophomore forward Piyo Debasey came off the bench to add two shots for the contest.
Concord returns to action 2:00 p.m. next Sunday at Alderson-Broaddus.
