WISE, Va. – The Concord University volleyball team lost a three-set match to UVa.-Wise inside the Prior Center Wednesday night in a non-conference match.
UVa.-Wise (3-7) took the match 25-21, 25-14, 25-21.
Set 1
Both teams made early runs as it was the Cavaliers that gained the first momentum of the match going up 14-11. CU (2-5) cut the deficit back to a point three different times, including at 22-21, after a kill from senior middle hitter
Sheridan Herron. But, UVa.-Wise closed the set by scoring four of the final five points.
Set 2
UVa.-Wise jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the second game after a 5-0 run—already with a two-point edge. The Mountain Lions trimmed the deficit to five points, 15-10, but was unable to close the margin any further as it fell behind 2-0 in the match.
Set 3
Facing another early deficit, this time 14-7, Concord went on a 12-5 run to pull even at 19-19 with the Cavaliers. The surge continued as Concord used consecutive kills from freshman outside hitter
Hannah Steele to go up 21-20. However, UVa.-Wise finished the match on a 5-0 run
Match Stats
Steele notched her first career double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs. Freshman defensive specialist
Kaylee Spees recorded a career-best 22 digs. Senior setter
Imani Rodgers racked up 17 assists. Junior middle hitter
Amber Hall added four kills and a team-best five total blocks.
The Mountain Lions begin Mountain East Conference play 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at West Virginia State.
