Concord Falters Against Winston-Salem State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Winston-Salem State in a non-conference conference contest at the Carter Center Tuesday night.

The Mountain Lions (2-4) lost 25-23, 25-19 and 25-17 to WSSU who picked up its first win of the year (1-6).

Set 1
Back-to-back kills from freshman outside hitter Hannah Steele got Concord to within 10-8, but the Rams ripped off seven of the next eight points points to go up 17-9. However, the Mountain Lions responded with nine consecutive points of their own to take an 18-17 edge. CU surged ahead without a kill as it received seven service aces from Steele and WSSU committed two attack errors. The lead was brief as Winston-Salem State scored three straight points and never trailed again in the game.

Set 2
Concord started the second set strong as it got two kills each from freshman outside hitter Gracie Brackney and junior middle hitter Amber Hall along with an ace from Steele to take a 6-2 lead. The lead grew to six points, 15-9, after a kill from senior middle hitter Sheridan Herron. But, nine of the next 10 points belonged to Winston-Salem State as it took an 18-16 advantage. CU got back to 19-18 after a Steele kill, but could never tie or take the lead in the remainder of the set.

Set 3
The Rams used the second-set comeback to jump out to a 13-3 lead in the third game. Down 24-14, Concord scored three straight points to work the deficit back into single digits, but could only draw as close as seven points before WSSU ended the match.

Match Stats
Steele finished with 12 kills, eight aces and three blocks as she tied the program record for single-match aces, set by senior setter Imani Rodgers at Bluefield State in September 2018. Speaking of Rodgers, she notched 14 assists. Brackney had seven kills. Herron added four kills and four blocks.
The Mountain Lions travel to UVa.-Wise 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
