Concord Cruises Past West Virginia State, 4-1

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team scored three times in the second half as it pulled away from West Virginia State for a 4-1 win Wednesday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at the Shawnee Sports Complex.

The Mountain Lions' (4-0, 2-0 MEC) only goal in the opening half was the second goal of the season for senior forward Leah Foster who slid a shot past WVSU's (1-2, 0-1 MEC) goalkeeper in the 18th minute. The lone score of the first half was assisted by fifth-year senior midfielder Yasmin Mosby.

Foster and Mosby along with junior forward Courtney Smith teamed together in the opening minute of the second half to quickly give CU a two-goal cushion to begin the final 45 minutes.

Dribbling down the middle of the field, Smith found Foster who one-timed the ball to the left side of the penalty area for Mosby to score her fourth goal of the season 34 seconds into the second half.

One of West Virginia State's two shots on goal found the back of the net in the 63rd minute, but the Mountain Lions had an answer less than two minutes later. An initial cross into the box was headed out by the WVSU defense, but found junior midfielder Michelle Brogden.

Brogden controlled possession, took two touches and lofted a goal from just inside 30 yards into the top left corner of the net to stretch the lead back out to two goals. Foster tallied her first multi-goal game of the season as she found the back of the net with just under 10 minutes left to play after a giveaway by the Yellow Jackets deep in their own territory.

Concord outshot WVSU, 14-5, and had an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. Foster finished with four shots. Smith added three and both of junior defender Zoe Belding's shots were on goal. Senior goalkeeper Leah Marsh made one save.

The nationally-ranked 24th rated Mountain Lions travel to Davis & Elkins 5:00 p.m. Sunday.
