FROSTBURG, Md. – Fifth-year senior midfielder
Yasmin Mosby scored her third goal in the last two games and added an assist on a second-half goal as the Concord University women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 win at Frostburg State Sunday afternoon in the Mountain East Conference opener.
After some midfield play in the early going, Mosby got CU (3-0, 1-0 MEC) on the board with a goal in the 24
th minute. The Hatfield, England native was able to dribble through the Bobcats' (1-2, 0-1 MEC) defense and fire a shot from just inside the penalty area and into the lower left corner of the goal for her third goal of the season.
The Mountain Lions' defense was largely untested in the first half as Concord owned a 9-3 total shots advantage in the first 45 minutes. However, Frostburg State put pressure on CU in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
Senior goalkeeper
Leah Marsh was forced into consecutive saves in the 58
th minute. Facing a rising shot from the midfield, Marsh tipped the attempt off the crossbar before the Concord defense forced a corner kick. On the ensuing corner, the Morgantown, West Virginia native had to make another one of her five saves in the contest.
After regaining momentum, the Mountain Lions went on a counter attack in the 70
th minute that finished with senior midfielder
Leah Foster firing a shot in the top right corner of the goal. Mosby assisted on the goal after playing a through ball to Foster.
FSU had one more attempt in the final 90 seconds of the contest that Marsh scooped up.
Concord had a 20-6 advantage in total shots, but owned just a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Foster had six shots while Mosby added four shots. Junior forward
Rachel Bell and junior midfielder
Ellie Hawcroft each had two shots.
CU continues its road swing at West Virginia State 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
