Concord Splits Doubleheader at Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team split the first two games of a weekend set with Glenville State at Sue Morris Park in Mountain East Conference action as CU won the first game 5-2 in extra innings before Glenville State took game two, 5-3.

Game 1: Concord 5 – Glenville State 2 (Ten Innings)
The Mountain Lions (14-20, 13-17 MEC) scored three runs in the top of the tenth inning that proved to be the difference in the contest.

Locked up at 2-2, a leadoff walk began a Concord rally in the tenth. With sophomore outfielder Josh Adkins in scoring position after a sacrifice bunt, freshman infielder Zack Saryeldin came through with a single into left field. Junior infielder Anthony Stehlin followed with an RBI double to stretch the lead out to 4-2. An error on the infield allowed Sthelin to cross to conclude the frame.

A couple of hits in the bottom of the inning brought the tying to the plate for Glenville State (17-18, 13-17 MEC). Stehlin was called in to close the game out as he got a swinging strikeout and a groundout to end the game. It was the fourth save of the season for the Woodbridge, Virginia native.

CU went up 2-0 early in the game as junior infielder Evan Antonellis hit a solo home run in the first inning, his fifth of the season. Saryeldin had his first RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly in the third.

The Pioneers tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run fourth as the game stay tied for the next five innings.

Junior outfielder Brandon Bayne and Saryeldin each had two hits with Saryeldin notching two RBI. Adkins scored twice including the go-ahead run.

The first five runs in the game belonged to the Pioneers as Concord settled for a split Friday.

After GSC raced out to a 5-0 lead through five innings, the Mountain Lions responded with a run in the sixth as freshman catcher Nick Funk came around to score after a leadoff walk. However, CU was unable to get any closer in the frame.

Funk was responsible for the scoring in the seventh as he hit a two-out, two-run home run to plate sophomore outfielder Richard Ortiz, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

An infield popup was induced to end the game.

Adkins and Stehlin each finished with two hits Funk's home run was his third of the season. Freshman pitcher Andrew Neff (2-3) went six innings as he allowed five runs to go with three strikeouts.
