Concord Loses to Charleston, Splits Four-Game Set

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team dropped the final two games of a Mountain East Conference South Division series to Charleston, 8-3 and 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The teams split the four-game set with CU winning 10-7 and 10-9 Saturday.

Game 1: Charleston 8 – Concord 3
Charleston (30-6, 24-4 MEC) scored the final six runs of the game as CU (13-19, 12-16 MEC) was unable to hang onto a late lead.

The Mountain Lions jumped to a 2-0 lead after the first inning as freshman infielder Zack Saryeldin led off the game with a home run, his fifth of the season. Meanwhile, freshman catcher Nick Funk recorded a two-out single later in the frame to plate junior infielder Evan Antonellis who had doubled.

The two-run edge held up until the third when UC got its own pair of runs.

A bases-loaded double play brought in a run in the fifth to give Concord a 3-2 advantage. However, Charleston had a response with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the sixth to take a one-run lead.

The Golden Eagles added four runs in the top of the seventh for the final margin.

Junior infielder Anthony Stehlin finished with two hits. Saryeldin scored twice.

Freshman utility Eddie Blake (2-2) was tagged with the loss as he pitched six innings, allowing five runs and striking out two.

Game 2: Charleston 4 – Concord 1
Both offenses were tamed by the other's pitching staff in the nightcap.

For the 13th time in the last 14 games, Concord scored in the first inning as sophomore outfielder Richard Ortiz's single to center field scored Saryeldin to open the scoring.

The Mountain Lions' defense kept UC off the board in the second and third innings as Concord turned double plays in each inning with runners in scoring position.

Charleston's Hayden Cartt blasted his second home run of the doubleheader to push the Golden Eagles in front 2-1 in the fourth before they adding a third run in the frame. Freshman pitcher Justyn Hudson relieved senior pitcher Spencer Hoyt over the final three innings to keep the deficit minimal as Hudson gave up one run in his appearance.

Still down two in the fifth, the Mountain Lions were able to get the tying run on base, but could not dip into the margin any further.

Hoyt (2-3) tossed four innings as he allowed three earned runs and recorded one strikeout. A trio of UC pitchers held Concord to five hits in the game.

Saryeldin had two hits at the top of the order. Antonellis added more two hits, including his second double of the twinbill.

The Mountain Lions travel to Glenville State 1:00 p.m. Friday to begin the final regular season series of the year.
