ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team dropped a pair of games, 7-5 and 9-1, to West Virginia State Monday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at the CU Softball Field.
Game 1: West Virginia State 7 – Concord 5
The Yellow Jackets (14-6, 11-1 MEC) raced out to a 7-2 lead before a seventh-inning rally came up short for Concord (7-13, 5-7 MEC).
Down by five in its last at-bat, sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Josie Brewer led off the frame with a walk before consecutive doubles from junior pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson and junior third baseman/outfielder
Sarah Thompson drew CU to within 7-4.
A walk to senior utility
Jenna Witt and sophomore catcher/outfielder
Jolie Privett getting hit by a pitch loaded the bases with no outs. A run scored on a wild pitch before senior outfielder/pitcher
Darby Fitzpatrick drew her own base on balls to reload the sacks.
However, WVSU induced two force outs at home plate and got an infield pop up to end the game as CU fell by two runs.
West Virginia State led 4-0 in the bottom of the third before the Thompson sisters scored on a base hit by Privett that included an error in the outfield allowing the Mountain Lions to cut the deficit in half.
WVSU answered, though, with three runs in the top of the sixth.
Senior outfielder
Dani Bloomingdale tied her career high with three hits. The Thompson sisters each had two hits while senior utility/catcher
Kaitlyn Stewart and Witt each had two hits. S. Thompson added two RBI. In all, Concord had 12 hits.
Senior pitcher/outfielder
Cartney Schoolcraft (2-4) gave up four earned runs and struck out two in six innings.
Game 2: West Virginia State 9 – Concord 1 (Five Innings)
WVSU scored six of its nine runs in the third and fourth innings as Concord was unable to keep pace.
L. Thompson led off the fourth inning with a single back through the middle before coming around to score on a two-out double by Witt to get the Mountain Lions on the board.
WVSU's Autumn Thompson limited CU to three hits in the nightcap.
L. Thompson (2-6) was charged with the loss as she allowed three earned runs and struck out three in two innings.
The Mountain Lions travel to Glenville State for a doubleheader 4:00 p.m. Wednesday.
