GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader with Glenville State at the Sue Morris Complex, winning 5-2 and losing 5-4, Wednesday afternoon.
Game 1: Concord 5 – Glenville State 2
The Mountain Lions (8-14, 6-8 MEC) leaned on the bat of senior catcher/utility
Kaitlyn Stewart as she accounted for the final three runs in the game.
Tied at 2-2 in the third inning, Stewart drove a double to center field to score senior utility
Jenna Witt, who had led off the off inning with a single, and senior outfielder
Dani Bloomingdale, who drew a walk right before Stewart's hit.
Stewart came up with an RBI single in the fifth to push CU in front 5-2 as sophomore catcher/outfielder
Jolie Privett scored after a one-out double in the frame.
Witt and Privett were responsible for the two runs in the first inning as Witt brought in junior third baseman/outfielder
Sarah Thompson while Witt scored on Privett's base hit.
Junior pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson (3-6) tossed 4.1 innings as she scattered four hits and gave up two runs while striking out seven. Senior pitcher/outfielder
Cartney Schoolcraft struck out five in the final 2.2 innings as she picked up her second save of the season.
Privett, Stewart and Witt all had two hits while Stewart had three RBI.
Game 2: Glenville State 5 – Concord 4
Glenville State scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and held off CU in the final three innings.
Each team scored a pair of runs in the first inning. The Concord runs came courtesy of a wild pitch from Glenville State that allowed S. Thompson to hustle home after she led off the game with a walk. Witt scored on a ground during the same at-bat.
Glenville State untied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the second, but the Mountain Lions had the answer as Witt's triple in the top of the third brought in L. Thompson.
Tied at 3-3 in the fourth, Bloomingdale drew a one-out walk and scored on a double from sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Josie Brewer to push CU in front. However, the Pioneers got two runs in the bottom of the frame to go up by a score.
Still down a run in the seventh, senior catcher/third baseman
Lauren Richardson doubled with two outs to put the tying run in scoring position, but was stranded to end the game.
Brewer and Schoolcraft combined to strike out 10 in six innings. Schoolcraft (2-5) was tagged with the loss in three innings of relief as she fanned seven.
Witt's triple in the third inning made her the all-time hits leader at Concord with 236. L. Thompson had two hits to pace the CU offense in the nightcap.
The Mountain Lions host Wheeling 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the CU Softball Field.
