ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team split a Monday afternoon Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Anderson Field with Davis & Elkins to win the series, 3-1, after sweeping a twinbill Sunday at home.
The Mountain Lions (11-17, 10-14 MEC) rebounded from a 9-5 loss to D&E (7-17, 7-17 MEC) to win game two, 19-7.
Game 1: Davis & Elkins 9 – Concord 5
Davis & Elkins scored five runs in the fourth to open up an 8-2 lead before holding off a seventh-inning CU rally.
The Senators scored three runs in their first at-bat before the Mountain Lions came back with a run in each of the first two innings to draw within 3-2.
With the slim advantage, Davis & Elkins plated five runs in the fourth inning, including a three-run home run in the rally, before tacking on a ninth run in the top of the sixth.
Junior catcher
Chance Davis got a run back for the Maroon and Gray in the bottom of the sixth with his second RBI of the day. The first four batters in the seventh reached for CU including an RBI double from junior infielder
Evan Antonellis.
Down 9-5, the Mountain Lions had the game-tying run on deck with one out, but were unable to get any closer to Davis & Elkins.

Anthony Stehlin, Antonellis and sophomore outfielder
Richard Ortiz combined to go 7-for-12 with Stehlin notching three hits. Davis had two RBI.
Freshman utility
Eddie Blake (2-1) threw three innings as he was charged with four earned runs on eight hits.
Game 2: Concord 19 – Davis & Elkins 7
Concord recorded season highs in both runs (19) and hits (20) in the nightcap as CU secured a series victory.
A 10-run second inning was the catalyst for the Mountain Lions in second game.
The second batter of the second, sophomore infielder
Juan Fortique, cracked a two-run home run down the left field line to open up a 4-0 edge. With two more runs across, Antonellis sent his fourth run of the season out to left field to give CU an 8-0 lead.
Still at the plate, three straight hitters reached with two outs to set up sophomore outfielder
Josh Adkins launching a grand slam over the right field fence to grow the lead to 12-0.
The Mountain Lions added two more runs in the third and three runs came in during the fifth as Concord led 17-0 before the Senators got on the board in the sixth. Senior infielder
Trevor Wimmer added two of his four RBI on the afternoon in the sixth.
Davis & Elkins scored five in the seventh for the final margin of victory for Concord.
The 20 hits for the Maroon and Gray are the most in an MEC game this season, and the most for Concord in over two years.

Nick Funk and Wimmer all had two hits. Adkins and Wimmer both had four RBI, including two, two-run doubles from Wimmer.
On the mound, senior pitcher
Spencer Hoyt (2-2) retired the first 14 batters he faced before stranding the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Hoyt allowed two hits, a walk and struck out a season-best seven as he tossed five shutout innings.
Concord begins a four-game series with nationally-ranked Charleston 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
