CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Charleston Friday night in a Mountain East Conference game at the Welch Athletic Complex.
The game featured just 13 total shots, and seven shots on goals, as both teams neutralized the other's offensive attack.
After a scoreless first half, the Mountain Lions (4-1) broke through in the 60
th minute.
It took CU no time to go the length of the field. Junior goalkeeper
Leah Marsh played the ball to freshman defender
Olivia Bekeleski who quickly gave way to junior midfielder
Olivia Dougherty across the half line. After a couple of dribbles, Dougherty threaded a pass to junior forward
Leah Foster outside the penalty area in the left corner. Foster, then, crossed a pass into the center of the box where sophomore forward
Courtney Smith buried her third goal of the season.
Concord became the first team to score on Charleston (3-1-1) this season after the Golden Eagles hadn't allowed a goal in their previous four games.
Dougherty had her own chance to extend the Concord lead in the 66
th minute, but was turned away.
After the Mountain Lions took the lead in the 60
th minute, Charleston had just one shot the rest of a game—a shot saved by Marsh in the 71
st minute.
Dougherty had two shots on goal in the contest while Smith's goal accounted for the other shot on goal for CU. Marsh made four saves to preserve her third straight shutout and run her scoreless streak to 299 minutes.
The back line of Bekeleski, senior defender
Alyssa Mahar and junior defender
Leigh Wightman held the Golden Eagles to seven shots in the game.
Concord hosts Glenville State at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex in Beckley, West Virginia 5:00 p.m. Tuesday.
