Concord Splits Two at Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Concord University softball team split a road doubleheader with Frostburg State, falling 5-2 in game one before bouncing back to win 12-5, in Mountain East Conference action at Bobcat Field Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: Frostburg State 5 – Concord 2
The Mountain Lions (11-17, 9-11 MEC) were unable to rally from three Frostburg State (16-7, 14-4 MEC) runs in the first inning.

FSU needed just one hit to plate the three runs in the opening frame.

Concord answered with two runs in the top of the third inning. Junior pitcher/outfielder Laura Thompson raced home on a wild pitch after she had doubled with one out. Senior utility Jenna Witt followed Thompson's double with a single and scored on a base hit by senior catcher/third baseman Lauren Richardson.

The Bobcats scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings to open up a three-run edge once again. CU brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth inning, but was unable to get any closer in game one.

Thompson had three hits at the top of the Concord order while Richardson had two more hits and an RBI. Thompson (4-8) was tagged with the loss as she allowed four earned runs to go with three strikeouts in four innings.

Game 2: Concord 12 – Frostburg State 5
Concord busted out the bats with 16 hits—the second most this season—as it earned a road split.

The Mountain Lions built a 9-0 lead through 3.5 innings as the first seven runs came in either the first or second innings. Richardson highlighted the scoring in the first with a two-run home run, her second long ball of the season.

Meanwhile, CU strung together five hits in a four-run second inning as L. Thompson and junior third baseman/outfielder Sarah Thompson had RBI hits in the frame. Senior catcher/utility Kaitlyn Stewart was also hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in a run.

After a sacrifice fly from senior outfielder/pitcher Darby Fitzpatrick in the top of the fourth pushed Concord out to a 9-0 advantage, Frostburg State scored five in the bottom of the frame.

The Mountain Lions were retired in order in the fifth, but answered with three runs in the sixth. L. Thompson notched her second RBI of the contest while freshman utility Alyssa Bernardini collected a run-scoring hit, and sophomore pitcher/outfielder Josie Brewer was on the receiving end of a bases loaded hit by pitch.

Senior outfielder Dani Bloomingdale and Witt led the offense in the nightcap with three hits apiece. L. Thompson added two hits to go with her two RBI. S. Thompson drove in three runs. Senior pitcher/outfielder Cartney Schoolcraft aided her pitching performance with two hits, both doubles.

In the circle, Schoolcraft (4-6) allowed five earned runs as she picked up her 25th career win. Brewer recorded the final nine outs to earn her first save of 2021 as she scattered three hits.

Concord remains on the road for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader at Fairmont State Sunday
