FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team split two games with Fairmont State, winning 1-0 and falling 10-2, Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Duvall-Rosier Field.
Game 1: Concord 1 – Fairmont State 0
Junior pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson tossed the second complete-game shutout of her career as the Mountain Lions (12-18, 10-12 MEC) scratched across a run in her support in the sixth to win game one.
Thompson issued three walks in the first three innings, but didn't allow further damage as she also struck out six in the first three frames of the contest. After the Prince George, Virginia native retired six straight from the third to the fifth innings, Fairmont State (18-8, 14-8 MEC) finally solved Thompson with a two-out triple that was stranded.
With the game still scoreless to start the top of the sixth, junior third baseman/outfielder
Sarah Thompson led off the inning with a double, her team-best 10
th of the season. Thompson moved over to third on a fly ball before scoring on senior catcher/third baseman
Lauren Richardson's sacrifice fly to left field.
The Fighting Falcons were able to put two runners aboard with two outs in the seventh, but Thompson induced a ground ball to secure the win for CU.
L. Thompson (5-8) tied her season high with nine strikeouts as she allowed two hits—the fewest for a start in her career. She needed 134 pitches to navigate the shutout. S. Thompson had two hits in the contest, and scored the game's only run.
Game 2: Fairmont State 10 – Concord 2 (Five Innings)
Fairmont State scored six of its 10 runs in the fourth inning as Concord fell in the nightcap.
Senior pitcher/outfielder
Cartney Schoolcraft escaped a jam in the first inning after the three FSU hitters reached to start the game. However, Fairmont State was only able to score once as Schoolcraft recorded back-to-back strikeouts.
Down 3-0, Concord got on the board in the top of the fourth after senior utility
Jenna Witt singled to start the inning, and came around to score on a double steal attempt.
The Fight Falcons answered with six runs in the bottom of the frame.
A two-out single from L. Thompson plated Schoolcraft in the top of the fifth, but Fairmont State came back with a run in the bottom half.
L. Thompson was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Schoolcraft (4-7) went 4.1 innings as she allowed four earned runs and struck out six.
The Mountain Lions welcome Glenville State to the CU Softball Field 4:00 p.m. Wednesday.
