Concord Downed by Notre Dame

AVON, Ohio – The Concord University baseball team dropped two games to Notre Dame Saturday afternoon at MercyHealth Stadium in Mountain East Conference play, 6-1 and 2-0.

Game 1: Notre Dame 6 – Concord 1
NDC (6-8, 3-3 MEC) scored all six runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Senior pitcher Trent Abernathy retired nine of the first 11 batters he faced in the game before the first two batters of the fourth reached against the Harrisonburg, Virginia native. The fourth inning is when the Falcons broke through for four of their six runs in the contest.

The Mountain Lions (0-9, 0-6 MEC) were quieted offensively by Notre Dame's Austin Mora who recorded 12 strikeouts on the afternoon. Four different players accounted for the CU hits as junior infielder Anthony Stehlin went 1-for-2 with two walks in the contest.

Abernathy (0-2) gave up six runs in six innings as he registered four strikeouts in the contest.

Game 2: Notre Dame 2 – Concord 0
The Falcons broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out, two-run single.

Senior pitcher Spencer Hoyt and NDC's Hayden Parker matched zeros on the mound as neither offense threatened in the first three innings.

Hoyt worked around a runner at third with two outs in the fourth, but quickly ended the threat with one of his five strikeouts over six innings.

Sophomore outfielder Josh Adkins got to second base with one out in the fifth, but was unable to score.

After Hoyt retired the side in order in the fifth, the first two batters of the sixth reached for NDC. With a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, it appeared Hoyt may be able to strand the go-ahead run at third base. However, Leo Wells sprayed a single back through the middle to plate two runs.

Freshman infielder Michael Dupont doubled with two outs in the top of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate, but Parker got the final out for the Falcons.

Hoyt was the hard luck loser as he scattered five hits and two runs in six innings.

Concord continues its road trip at Alderson Broaddus 1:00 p.m. Monday.
