Concord Takes to Road for Games Against West Virginia Wesleyan, Davis & Elkins

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team makes a four-game road swing to face Mountain East Conference foes West Virginia Wesleyan 3:00 p.m. Friday and Davis & Elkins 1:00 p.m. Saturday.

RECORDS
Concord swept Bluefield State in non-conference action Wednesday to improve to 3-9.

Friday will be the first games of the season for West Virginia Wesleyan.

The Senators are 2-2 in 2021 after two losses to Frostburg State and two wins over Fairmont State.

BREAKING OUT THE BATS
In a sweep over Bluefield State, the Mountain Lions scored 23 runs while collecting 22 hits over the two games. The 14 runs scored by Concord in game one were the most since March 8, 2020 when it plated 15 runs against Upper Iowa. Senior utility Jenna Witt finished the doubleheader by going 5-for-5 with five runs scored, six RBI and four extra-base hits including a home run in each game. Junior third baseman/outfielder Sarah Thompson finished with four hits in the two games, including her first career game with two doubles as she did so in the nightcap. Witt inched closer to the top three in career hits at Concord as she elevated her total to 220, seven hits shy of passing Alyssa Morris (2013-16) for third.

SIT EM DOWN
Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Josie Brewer struck out a career-best 10 hitters in game two against Bluefield State. The Pulaski, Virginia native became the third active CU pitcher to record a 10-strikeout game as senior pitcher/outfielder Cartney Schoolcraft and junior pitcher/outfielder Laura Thompson both have multiple 10-strikeout games in their careers. For Schoolcraft, one of her five career 10-strikeout games came April 28, 2019 against West Virginia Wesleyan as the Mountain Lions won three of four games against the Bobcats in 2019. With five strikeouts at West Virginia State on Sunday, Schoolcraft tied Tamara Smith for third on the career strikeout list at Concord with 224.

SWEEPING THE ROAD
The Mountain Lions picked up a sweep over the Bobcats the last time the teams met in Buckhannon, West Virginia. Concord leaned on Schoolcraft in the circle as the Winfield, West Virginia native struck out 17 combined batters in 12 innings of work over two games. Senior catcher/utility Kaitlyn Stewart and Witt paced the offense with two hits each in a 5-2 game one win at the end of April 2019. L. Thompson and Witt combined for four hits and three RBI in the nightcap as CU took game two, 6-4. Concord plays at Davis & Elkins for the time since April 10, 2013 when it outscored D&E 19-6 in two games to grab two wins.

WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
The Bobcats are under the direction of longtime head coach Steve Warner who has surpassed 1,000 wins in his career. Wesleyan will be playing its first game sinces March 7, 2020 when they take to Culpepper Field Friday afternoon. The duo of Hannah Hudson and Abigail O'Shields combined to strike out 68 batters last season. Offensively, Brooke Clark and Grace Smith paced the Bobcats with 16 combined RBI.

DAVIS & ELKINS AT A GLANCE
The Senators did not score more than four runs in their first four games of the season, but D&E's pitching staff allowed two or fewer runs in three of the four games with Frostburg State and Fairmont State. Haley Grindstaff pitched a two-hit shutout of Fairmont State, and has an ERA of 0.69 in 13 innings. Jenna Evans is averaging a strikeout per inning in 12 innings so far with an ERA of 2.19. Kailynn Parks is batting .400 and has accounted for three of the seven RBI for Davis & Elkins.
