Concord Falls in Four Narrow Sets to West Virginia Wesleyan

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to West Virginia Wesleyan, 21-25, 29-27, 29-31, 20-25, Tuesday night in a Mountain East Conference match at the Carter Center.

Set 1
Concord (0-7) trailed throughout most of the set, but rallied to tie the score at 14-14, and again at 21-21 after facing a four-point deficit the second time. Senior outside hitter Kirsti Pouncy recorded two kills during the quick 4-0 burst. Locked at 21, the Bobcats (6-3) matched Concord's 4-0 run as they took the first set by four points.

Set 2
The second game was the start of consecutive exciting sets with the first one going to CU. The Mountain Lions scored 10 of the first 15 points after junior defensive specialist Kelli Ellison had one of her two service aces in the match. WVWC did not go away quietly though as it slowly chipped away at the Concord lead, eventually evening the set at 22-22. From there, neither team could gain traction. Down 27-26, two Wesleyan errors gave Concord a one-point edge, and junior middle hitter Sheridan Herron ended the game with a kill.

Set 3
The third set featured 20 ties and 10 lead changes with neither team leading by more than two points until the Mountain Lions took a 24-21 lead on a service ace by Herron. Wesleyan had an answer though, scoring three consecutive points to knot the set. CU took a brief 27-26 lead after another Ellison service ace, but the Bobcats took the game, 31-29.

Set 4
Concord shook off the narrow third set loss and opened up a 13-8 lead on WVWC to start the fourth game. However, the Bobcats came right back with six straight points to grab a 14-13 advantage. The surge continued for Wesleyan as it went up, 21-17, on its way to the five-point.
