DUNBAR, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team opened up the spring 2021 season with a 5-0 win Friday night in Mountain East Conference play at the Shawnee Sports Complex.
Concord got three first-half goals from junior forward
Leah Foster as the Mountain Lions staked themselves out to a 3-0 halftime lead.
Foster's first goal of the contest came in the 17
th minute as sophomore midfielder
Michelle Brogden sent a corner kick into the penalty area where it found Foster who tapped the ball in. In the 34
th minute, Foster took a pass from sophomore defender
Zoe Belding down the right flank and buried her second goal.
The final first-half goal for the Wigan, England native came 10 minute later as Foster pounced on a rebound off the crossbar and sent her third goal of the game into the back of the net. The hat trick for Foster was the fourth of her career.
CU built on its lead in the 62
nd minute as sophomore forward
Courtney Smith dribbled down the right side—just outside the penalty area—and lined up a shot from a sharp angle along the end line for her first career goal in the Maroon and Gray.
Concord's final goal of the game came off a corner kick delivered by senior midfielder
Yasmin Mosby which found the foot of junior midfielder
Jasmine Daily for her first goal as a Mountain Lion in the 88
th minute.
Junior goalkeeper
Leah Marsh was forced into making five saves on the night to keep the shutout intact for CU.
The Mountain Lions owned a 22-9 advantage in overall shots, and had 13 shots on goal compared to five for WVSU.
Foster had five shots on goal with Smith adding three more.
Friday night was the first ever varsity women's soccer game for West Virginia State.
Up next for Concord is the home opener March 5 at 6:30 p.m. against Charleston at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex in Beckley, West Virginia.
