Concord Surpasses Century Mark in 104-93 Win at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team combined a strong end to the third quarter, and a surge early in the fourth to get by West Virginia State, 104-93, Wednesday night in Mountain East Conference action at the Walker Convocation Center.

Down 66-60 with 5:49 left to go in the third quarter, the Mountain Lions (7-5) closed the period on a 19-8 run that included a third-quarter, buzzer-beating three-pointer from senior guard Keely Lundy. Six different players accounted for the final 19 points of the third with Lundy connecting on five, and senior forward Tamra Scott posting four points.

The momentum of the third carried over the fourth as Lundy canned another three-pointer while junior guard Maggie Guynn hit a jumper to push CU's lead to 84-74.

West Virginia State (6-6) chipped the Concord lead back to 88-84, but senior forward Riley Fitzwater converted a layup, and Lundy canned her final of three three-pointers on the evening to run the lead back to nine, 93-84, with 6:24 left in the fourth.

The Yellow Jackets were only able to get as close as eight points for the remainder of the game.

The teams traded the lead four times and were tied nine times in the first half. Concord led by as much as 10 points in the first quarter, but WVSU finished the opening 10 minutes on a 16-3 run to grab a 29-26 lead.

Like the first quarter, CU led for the much of the second, but it was the Yellow Jackets that held a 56-52 lead at halftime.

Fitzwater finished the game with 32 points—her second 30-point game of the season—to go with 10 rebounds. The Glenville, West Virginia native shot 14-of-17 from the floor.

Guynn added a career-best 27 points to go with a career-high seven assists. Guynn shot an efficient 11-for-15 from the field. Freshman guard Maddie Ratcliff scored 11 of her 15 points in the first half while adding a career-best five steals.

Lundy scored all 11 of her points after halftime, and freshman guard Jaisah Smith pitched in 10 points.

Senior forward Tamra Scott added seven points and eight rebounds off the bench.

The Mountain Lions shot 64.1 percent (41-for-64) from the field. Defensive, CU held West Virginia State to four made three-pointers in the second half after the Yellow Jackets converted 10 triples in the first half.

The 64.1 percent shooting was a season best and only two percent off a program best set last season.

Concord welcomes nationally-ranked and undefeated Charleston to the Carter Center 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
