HONOLULU – The Concord University women's basketball team dropped a 69-41 to Alaska-Anchorage Friday afternoon at McCabe Gymnasium in a non-conference matchup as part of the Malika Sports Christmas Tournament.
The nationally-ranked fifth-rated Seawolves (8-0) started the game on a 10-2 run and led 23-8 after a quarter.
Concord (7-4) cut the deficit back to 13 points, 25-12, after a layup from fifth-year senior forward
Riley Fitzwater and again, 28-15, after a three-pointer from sophomore guard
Jaisah Smith at the 5:55 mark of the second quarter.
However, Alaska-Anchorage outscored the Mountain Lions 11-3 over the final six minutes of the first half to lead 39-18 at the intermission.
The 21-point deficit was as close as CU would get for the remainder of the game.
Fitzwater and junior forward
Alexis Phillips each scored 11 points. Fitzwater notched a double-double by adding 13 rebounds. Also on Friday, senior guard
Gracie Robinson went over 200 career assists.
Concord shot better from the field than UAA (40-38.7), but was unable to overcome 32 turnovers that the Seawolves turned into 31 points.
Despite Friday's loss the Mountain Lions still became the first CU team—any program—to win a game outside the continental United States as it upended Hawaii Pacific Thursday. As an educational experience, Concord will tour Pearl Harbor Saturday before flying back to West Virginia Sunday.
CU returns to action January 5 when it travels to West Liberty. Â
