ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team faltered against Frostburg State, 90-74, Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference contest at the Carter Center.

The Mountain Lions (4-7, 2-4 MEC) trailed by 15 points, 24-9, in the first eight minutes of the game and was only able to close the gap to 11 points in the first half, 34-23, at the 5:54 mark after a layup by sophomore guard Dorian Groggs.

Already up 15 points out of the halftime intermission, Frostburg State (4-7, 3-3 MEC) extended the lead to 22, 52-30, at the 18:05 mark. CU was able to trim the margin to 12 points, 57-45, five minutes later after another Groggs bucket.

FSU withstood the mini run from the Maroon and Gray as it held off Concord getting the deficit under 10 points until a layup from sophomore guard Jordan Wooden at the 7:41mark cutting the Frostburg State lead to nine, 68-59.

CU got to within nine points five different times, and was only able to get as close as eight points, 78-70, with 3:25 remaining. The next six points belonged to the Bobcats as it held off a further run from the Mountain Lions.

Fifth-year senior guard Matt Weir poured in a career-high 28 points on 8-of-16 shooting and a 10-for-11 showing from the foul line. Weir drew nine fouls in the game. His 28 points are a single-game season high for any CU player and he also added eight rebounds.

Wooden finished with a career-high 13 points as he knocked in 4-of-6 shots from the floor and missed just one free throw, 5-for-6. Also off the bench, Groggs and junior guard Ethan Heller both added 10 points.

Led by Weir, Concord shot 87 percent from the foul line (20-for-23). FSU rang in 12 three-pointers and shot 48 percent from the beyond the arc (12-for-25).

The Mountain Lions travel to nationally-ranked West Liberty January 5 to begin the 2022 portion of the season.
