Concord Comes Up Short at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team lost in three sets to Charleston, 25-21, 25-19, 30-28, Tuesday night in Mountain East Conference action inside the Wehrle Center.

Set 1
The Golden Eagles (20-9, 10-5 MEC) scored 10 of the first 15 points of the match as CU (8-17, 3-12 MEC) was forced to chase the lead. Still trailing 16-7, the Mountain Lions went on a 13-5 run to close within 21-20 after kill from freshman outside hitter Gracie Brackney. Freshman outside hitter Hannah Steele notched three kills during the spurt. However, Charleston held Concord to one point for the remainder of the set.

Set 2
The Mountain Lions never allowed Charleston to get away in the middle game as the Golden Eagles never led by more than four points early on. After a kill from junior middle hitter Amber Hall, Concord was back to within one, 15-14. But a quick 3-0 spurt gave UC enough breathing room to close out the set.

Set 3
Charleston led by three, three different times in the game before CU overtook the Golden Eagles, 15-14. With the game tied at 19-19, Concord ripped off three straight points on a kill from junior outside hitter Hailey Buchanan followed by back-to-back service aces from Buchanan. It appeared the Mountain Lions would close out the set after an ace from Steele made it 24-20, but UC scored four straight to even the set. Concord also had chances to close out the set at 26-25 and 28-27, but it was the Golden Eagles that took the game.

Senior middle hitter Sheridan Herron paced the offense with 17 kills, one off her career high. She also hit .615 in the match. Senior setter Imani Rodgers had 20 assists and eight digs. Hall had nine kills and hit .333 in the match while Steele chipped in seven kills.
