Concord Tops Glenville State in Five Sets on Senior Night

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team outlasted Glenville State in five sets on Senior Night Friday night inside the Carter Center in a Mountain East Conference matchup.

After winning the first set 25-10, Concord (9-17, 4-12 MEC) dropped the next two sets 26-24 and 25-18. However, the Mountain Lions forced a fifth set with a 25-20 win in the fourth game and won 15-10 in the decisive set.

Set 1
The Mountain Lions hit .588 in the opening game as it started the match on a 14-7 run after freshman outside hitter Hannah Steele capped the spurt. The lead ballooned to 21-7 after a service ace from senior setter Imani Rodgers. A Steele kill ended a dominant first set for CU.

Set 2
Neither team led by more than three points in the game as the Pioneers (2-19, 1-15 MEC) took a 17-14 lead. But a quick 4-0 run pushed the Mountain Lions back in front. Leading at 22-20 after a service ace from sophomore setter Kristin Lough, Concord watched GSC finish the set on a 6-2 run to even the match.

Set 3
Glenville State scored 14 of the first 20 points of the game, however, the Maroon and Gray responded with their own run of 7-1 to draw within 15-13. The spurt would be thwarted by the Pioneers as the took a 21-14 advantage on their way to going up 2-1.

Set 4
Concord jumped out to a 12-8 edge, but had to withstand a GSC run in the middle part of the set. Trailing 18-17, the Mountain Lions capped the set with an 8-3 run to force a fifth set. Back-to-back kills from Steele and senior right side Peyton Wiseman pushed CU up 22-20.

Set 5
CU got the breathing room it needed to clinch a victory with the score tied at 5-5. Three straight points gave the Mountain Lions an 8-5 edge on a kill from Wiseman and another ace from Lough. The next point went to Glenville State, but the Pioneers never got any closer in the game.

Match Stats
In her final match, senior middle hitter Herron became the first player with a 10-block performance since 2016 as she finished with five kills and 10 blocks. Herron also moved into the top 10 in program history in blocks with 255. Rodgers went for 25 assists and six digs. Senior defensive specialist Kelli Ellison chipped in 20 digs. Steele notched 11 kills and eight more digs.

Ellison, Herron middle hitter Olivia Houk, outside hitter Jessica King, Rodgers and Wiseman played their final match at Concord Friday night.
