Concord Sweeps West Virginia Wesleyan

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team swept West Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday night, 25-20, 25-12, 34-32, in a Mountain East Conference match inside the Carter Center.

Concord improves to 7-15 overall and 3-10 in the MEC while WVWC drops to 3-19 this year and is also 3-10 in conference play.

Set 1
A 7-3 run by CU to open the match forced the Bobcats to chase the lead as they were able to cut the deficit back to 14-13. However, a 5-0 run, with two kills from junior middle hitter Amber Hall aiding the spurt, allowed the Mountain Lions to gain a 19-13 edge. The lead grew to as much as seven, 22-15, before a kill from senior middle hitter Sheridan Herron and a service ace from senior setter Imani Rodgers pushed Concord up 1-0 in the match.

Set 2
The Mountain Lions got out to a 9-1 advantage in the middle game as Rodgers started the set how the first game ended—with an ace—before freshman defensive specialist Kaylee Spees chipped in three of her four service aces for the match. The Bobcats answered to draw within 10-6, but Concord responded with an 11-4 run to open up a 21-10 lead on its way to a 2-0 sets lead.

Set 3
The third game featured 18 ties and three lead changes with CU not taking its first lead until 17-16 after a Herron kill. Wesleyan, though, came right back to take a 19-18 edge and opened up a 23-20 lead. Facing the possibility of a fourth set, Concord watched WVWC commit three straight attack errors to tie the set at 24-24. Concord had seven different chances to close out the match, but it wasn't until Herron's eighth kill of the match and a ball handling error by the Bobcats secured a sweep for the Mountain Lions.

Match Stats
Freshman outside hitter Hannah Steele led all players with 13 kills to go with nine digs. Hall added nine kills and a hitting percentage of .500 with just one error in 16 attempts. Herron collected four total blocks and four digs to go with her eight kills.

Senior defensive specialist Kelli Ellison tallied 27 digs while Spees had 10 digs and four of CU's seven service aces. Rodgers recorded 22 assists and two more aces.

The Mountain Lions begin a three-match road trip at Davis & Elkins 7:00 p.m. Friday.
