BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team defeated the Bobcats of Frostburg State 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the YMCA Cline Complex in the Mountain East Conference Championship.
The conference title is the third in program history and second in the last two years.
Neither team was successful in finding the back of the net during the first half. Concord (17-0-3) started off aggressive early on the offensive end, outshooting Frostburg State 11-3. CU had a few opportunities on offense including a shot from junior forward
Courtney Smith that sailed just high of the crossbar. Senior goalkeeper
Leah Marsh made a great save moving to her right in the 36
th minute to keep the game scoreless. It was Marsh's first of three saves on the day.
In the 61
st minute, a handball on Frostburg State (12-6-2) in the box set up a penalty kick for fifth-year midfielder
Yasmin Mosby. Mosby's penalty kick was towards the middle of the net while FSU goalkeeper Ashley Bilger dove to her right. Mosby's goal gave the Mountain Lions the lead and they didn't look back. Concord outshot FSU 19-7 in the match.
After the match Mosby, Smith, and junior defender
Zoe Belding were named to All-MEC Tournament honors. Mosby had two key goals, one coming in each game of Concord's tournament run. Smith had the game-winning goal against Fairmont State. Belding was busy in the midfield as Concord controlled the possession in both tournament wins.
The Mountain Lions advance to the NCAA Tournament and will find out their first-round opponent and location, Monday 6:00 p.m. when the NCAA Women's Soccer Selection Show airs.
