Beckley, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team came out victorious against Mercyhurst University (14-6-1) 3-1, Thursday evening at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex in Beckley, West Virginia.
Thursday's win marks the first victory in the NCAA Regional Tournament in program history.
The Mountain Lions (18-0-3) brought an aggressive offensive attack, collecting 17 total corner kicks in the match. A corner kick in the 21
st minute produced a shot from junior forward
Rachel Bell, that was saved and cleared by a Laker defender. But, junior midfielder
Michelle Brogden kept the attack alive by crossing it back into the box where fifth-year senior midfielder
Yasmin Mosby booted in the opening goal of the match. The goal was Mosby's 22
nd on the season. Brogden was credited with her eighth assist of the fall.
In the 29
th minute, a CU defensive error allowed Mercyhurst's Emily Mijares to score the equalizer. Concord outshot the Lakers going into the half, 13-3.
Concord took the lead back in the 62
nd minute when senior forward
Leah Foster crossed a ball to Brogden, who sent a bouncing shot off the post and into the net. The Mountain Lions added an insurance goal in the 76
th minute when fifth-year senior defender
Morgan Carmichael crossed a pass through the box where junior defender
Zoe Belding who deflected the ball off the heel of her foot and into the net.
Mercyhurst had an opportunity to score in the 80
th minute, but a huge save by senior goalkeeper
Leah Marsh stifled the Lakers, chance. On a corner kick in the 86
th minute, Mercyhurst's shot was saved on the goal line by Carmichael and cleared away from danger.
Concord outshot Mercyhurst, 26-10 in the match.
The Mountain Lions will face Bloomsburg in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex in Beckley, West Virginia. Saturday's game will be the NCAA Tournament's Round of 32.
