CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team came out victorious against University of Charleston, 3-2, Wednesday afternoon at the Welch Athletic Complex in a Mountain East Conference game.
Concord (9-0-1, 7-0-1 MEC) started off the scoring late in the first half. A well-defended UC corner kick quickly transitioned to an offensive attack for Concord as senior forward
Leah Foster outran the defense and beat the keeper to score her seventh goal of the season in the 44
th minute.
At the end of the first half, CU outshot Charleston (5-4, 4-3 MEC), 8-3. Senior goalkeeper
Leah Marsh saved the only shot on goal that she faced in the half.
The Mountain Lions came out of the halftime with early momentum when freshman defender
Leah Fleming scored her first career goal in the 49
th minute. Junior forward
Courtney Smith tallied her seventh assist of the season on the play.
The Golden Eagles responded with a goal of their own in the 57
th minute. UC kept their momentum going by scoring off a corner kick in the 58
th minute to tie the game up.
Fifth-year midfielder
Yasmin Mosby helped Concord regain the lead by scoring her 12
th goal of the season in the 61
st minute. Once again, Smith was credited with another assist. Mosby's goal would be the deciding factor as Concord was able to shut down the Golden Eagles for the rest of the game, having to clear out a couple late corner kicks to preserve the win.
Concord outshot Charleston, 25-9, in the game. Mosby led the team with six shots of her own. After UC's second goal, the Mountain Lion defense tightened up down the stretch by only allowing two shots for the rest of the game.
CU will return to the YMCA Paul Cline Complex in Beckley, West Virginia Sunday for a match against Fairmont State at 3:00 pm.
