Concord Surges Past Alderson-Broaddus in Four Sets

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team won the final three games over Alderson-Broaddus as it picked up a four-set win Friday night in a Mountain East Conference match inside Rex Pyles Arena.

After dropping the first set, 25-21, the Mountain Lions (6-15, 2-10 MEC) took the remaining games, 25-22, 25-19, 25-15 as Alderson-Broaddus dropped to 5-13 this season and 1-10 versus MEC foes.

Set 1
Tied at 9-9 in the opening game, CU rattled off five straight points behind four AB errors as well as a service aces from freshman defensive specialist Kaylee Spees. The lead would stand up until the Battlers came back to tie the set at 19-19. The next two points belonged to CU, but Alderson-Broaddus had an answer with a 6-0 run to go up 1-0 in the match.

Set 2
The Mountain Lions used a 4-0 run to gain a 14-11 edge in the middle of the second game, but found themselves down 19-17. A kill from junior middle hitter Amber Hall as well as two Battler errors allowed CU to take a 20-19 edge. After going back-and-forth, the set was knotted at 22-22. CU made the final run in the set on a kill from Hall, a service ace from senior defensive specialist Kelli Ellison and an attack error by AB to close the set out.

Set 3
Down 11-10 in a crucial third game, Concord was the recipient of six Alderson-Broaddus errors as well as a kill from junior outside hitter Hailey Buchanan as it grabbed a 17-11 edge. AB trimmed the margin back to three points, 18-15, but five more errors from the Battlers pushed Concord up eight as it led 2-1 in the match.

Set 4
The Mountain Lions opened the game on an 11-4 spurt behind eight combined kills from freshman outside hitter Hannah Steele (five) and senior middle hitter Sheridan Herron (three). The lead expanded to nine, 17-8, after a service ace from senior setter Imani Rodgers. And Hall was able to give Concord a double-digit win in the final game with a kill at 24-15.

Match Stats
Steele notched her fifth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 14 digs. Hall recorded 12 more kills and finished with six total blocks. Herron added seven kills and five blocks. The setting duo of Rodgers (17) and sophomore Kristin Lough (16) combined for 33 assists. Ellison had a match-high 23 digs.

CU finished two blocks shy of a tying a season high with 12. The Mountain Lions also collected nine aces as Rodgers had four.

Concord welcomes West Virginia Wesleyan to the Carter Center 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
