Concord Clipped at Notre Dame

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Concord University volleyball team lost in four sets, 25-23, 23-25, 13-25, 20-25, to Notre Dame Thursday night in a Mountain East Conference contest at Murphy Gymnasium.

Set 1
The Mountain Lions (5-15, 1-10 MEC) maintained a lead in the early going until NDC (14-12, 5-6 MEC) took a 15-13 edge. Concord answered with three straight points as freshman outside hitter Hannah Steele had two kills and senior middle hitter Sheridan Herron added a third kill. CU did not allow Notre Dame to a take the lead for the remainder of the set as a Herron kill and Falcons' attack error pushed CU to a game one win.

Set 2
Concord had the early momentum as it went up 10-6 after a kill from junior middle hitter Amber Hall. However, Notre Dame came back with a 13-5 run as it gained a 19-15 advantage. The Maroon and Gray fought back to trim the deficit to 24-23 after consecutive kills from Steele, but NDC evened the match with a two-point win.

Set 3
The Falcons opened the pivotal third game on a 13-5 spurt. CU chipped away at the deficit to close within 19-13, but was unable to get any closer.

Set 4
CU scored five straight points to erase an early 5-1 deficit and a 12-8 margin to lead 13-12. From there, neither team took immediate control of the set as Steele's 18th kill of the match tied the game at 18-18. Notre Dame countered with five consecutive points to take a 23-18 lead. CU was unable to cut the deficit any closer

Match Stats
Steele just missed a double-double with nine digs to go with 18 kills and a hitting percentage of .255. Hall and Herron each had eight kills with Herron chipping in three total blocks. Senior setter Imani Rodgers notched 25 assists while sophomore setter Kristin Lough just missed her own double-double of 16 assists and nine digs.

Senior defensive specialist Kelli Ellison tallied 22 digs and freshman defensive specialist Kaylee Spees pitched in 16 digs.

Concord continues its road trip 7:00 p.m. Friday at Alderson-Broaddus.
