Concord Scores Three Times in Road Win at Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team (2-13, 2-11 MEC) came out victorious against Wheeling, 3-1 Wednesday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at the Bishop Schmitt Field.

In the first half, both teams were held scoreless. The Cardinals (4-9-1, 3-8-1 MEC) outshot CU, 13-6.

Senior goalkeeper Kyle Brown had four saves in the first half. Concord's best chances came from freshman defender Ted Penn and sophomore defender Ezequiel Villarreal who each had a shot saved in the opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Mountain Lions took no time scoring in the 47th minute. Off a free kick delivered into the box, sophomore forward Piyo Debesay headed it to freshman forward Francisco Salcedo who ripped it past the keeper into the net.

CU added an insurance goal in the 84th minute when sophomore forward Lucas Asato delivered a perfect pass to Penn who put it in the top corner of the net to put CU up 2-0. Penn followed up his goal with an assist on a goal scored by Debesay in the 87th minute.

Wheeling would find the back of the net in the 88th minute, but that would be the final score of the match.

Brown had a total of eight saves in the match to help the Mountain Lions to victory.

Debesay had three shots to lead the Mountain Lions while both of Penn's shots were on target.

Concord will face Alderson-Broaddus in Beckley, West Virginia Sunday at 3:30 pm.
