RECORDS
CU is coming off a 91-83 upset win over fourth-ranked West Liberty Wednesday at home as it improved to 3-2.
Alderson Broaddus ended a three-game losing streak by defeating Frostburg State at home, 90-76. The Battlers are 2-3 this season.
THREES COMPANY
Three different Mountain Lions had career nights to aid the upset of the Hilltoppers. Senior guard/forward
Malik Johnson scored a career-best 25 points as he shot 8-of-10 from the field and was 6-for-9 at the foul line. With his performance, Johnson moved into 10
th in the MEC in scoring per game at 17.8. Making his second career start, junior forward
Mohamed Bundu tossed in a career-best 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Going into Wednesday, the Largo, Maryland native had only scored 12 points in the first four games combined. Half of Bundu's points came at the foul line where he was 11-of-15 for the night. In his third consecutive start at point guard, junior guard
Seth Brown tallied his first double-figure scoring game in the Maroon and Gray as he posted 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Brown also navigated the WLU pressure defense by committing just three turnovers in 28 minutes of action.
PROTECT THIS HOUSE
Concord defended its home court versus West Liberty by taking away the three-pointer and controlling the boards—two staples of WLU's success over the last decade-plus. WLU had gone 132 consecutive games of making more than five three-pointers until Wednesday night when CU limited the Hilltoppers to 5-of-21 from beyond the arc. West Liberty was also outrebounding teams by nearly 15 boards on average ahead of Wednesday night. However, led by Bundu's 14 rebounds, Concord held a 33-26 edge on the glasswhich included holding WLU to 10 offensive rebounds, nearly 10 below its season average. Bundu's 27 rebounds over the last two games are the most for a CU player in a two-game stretch since
Terry Hopewell closed his career with 28 rebounds in March 2016. The Mountain Lions also frustrated WLU's top two players in preseason All-American Dalton Bolon and 2020 MEC Tournament MVP Will Yoakum. Junior guard
Brandon Kennedy and Johnson forced Bolon into seven turnovers. Meanwhile, Yoakum was held to 2-for-10 shooting by Bundu and freshman forward
Luken Hill.
FINDING THE STROKE
A game after going 11-for-27 at the foul line against Davis & Elkins, Concord found its groove at the charity stripe by sinking 26 free throws on 34 attempts (76.5 percent), led by Bundu's 11. The 26 foul shots made by the Maroon and Gray were the most in almost two years to the day when Concord hit 27 in an overtime loss at West Liberty January 19, 2019. Johnson stroked up six successful foul shots to help out at the line. In the final 1:39 of the game, Concord was 11-for-12 at the foul line which helped the Mountain Lions hold off the West Liberty 14-0 run that closed CU's lead to 80-78.
LESS IS MORE
The Mountain Lions enter Saturday's contest leading the MEC in three-point shooting percentage (38.0), but 10
th in the conference in three-pointers made per game (6.4). Concord has shot at least 38 percent from three-point line in three of five games of this season. Johnson is making 42.1 percent (8-for-18) of his three-pointers. In a limited sample size, senior forward
David Bea Mulumba has hit 8-of-13 attempts from outside (61.5 percent). However, CU is one of three teams in the MEC to have yet made 10 triples in a game this season—the others are Davis & Elkins and Notre Dame. Concord's season high for three-pointers is eight—twice in the first two games of the season.
RUNNING EM OFF THE LINE
Concord's three-point defense will be tested Saturday afternoon. Concord has held four of its five opponents below 35 percent from behind the arc this season, and three of five to less than 30 percent. The Mountain Lions are holding opponents to 29.3 percent from three-point range, fourth in the MEC. Meanwhile, Alderson Broaddus is third in the MEC in three-pointers made per game led at 9.2. The Battlers have made at least nine three-pointers in four of their five games this season, but was held to seven triples in their win over Frostburg State. In the last 13 regular season games, the Mountain Lions have surrendered 10 or more three-pointers just three times.
OLD FOES, NEW FACES
Saturday marks the 93
rd meeting between Concord and Alderson Broaddus with AB holding a 62-32 edge, but over the last eight years the teams have met sparingly. After the dissolve of the WVIAC in 2013, CU and the Battlers didn't meet again until November 2016 when Concord outscored Alderson Broaddus 45-30 in the second, winning 81-59. The two teams met again in November 2017 in a non-conference return date at the Carter Center. The Battlesr were able to hold off Concord, 72-69. The only players left on either roster to play in the 2017 meeting are CU's Johnson and Mulumba. Johnson scored eight points in 17 minutes. Mulumba made his only field goal of the game in one minute of action.
