WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Concord University softball team lost two games Monday in Florida as it fell to the top-ranked team in Division II, Augustan, 5-1, and was defeated 3-1 by Minnesota State-Mankato in the night cap.
Game 1: No. 1 Augustana 5 – Concord 1
Augustana plated all five runs in the fourth inning as CU was unable to hold off the defending national champions.
The Mountain Lions scratched across a run in the second inning as sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson scored on an error after a leadoff double in the frame.
Before the Vikings rally in the bottom of the fourth, Concord appeared it may widen its lead in the top half of the inning. Freshman catcher/outfielder
Jolie Privett led off the inning with her own double, and Thompson was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with no outs, but Augustana escaped the jam.
Thompson (1-2) was tagged with the loss as she gave up three runs in three innings while striking out two batters. Thompson and her sister, sophomore third baseman/outfielder
Sarah Thompson each had two hits in the game.
Game 2: Minnesota-Mankato 3 – Concord 1
The first inning decided the game as the Mavericks scored two runs to CU's one in the bottom of the inning.
After MSU plated its two runs to the start the game, Concord strung together three hits in a four-batter sequence as Privett's single brought in S. Thompson to trim the deficit in half. With two runners on and two outs, the Mountain Lions were unable to tie the game early on.
Minnesota-Mankato added an insurance run in the sixth inning.
Junior pitcher/outfielder
Cartney Schoolcraft (3-2) was the pitcher of record for Concord as she struck out eight in five innings of work. S. Thompson collected two more hits in game two of the day. Privett added two base knocks and an RBI.
The Mountain Lions close their time in Florida as they take on Bemidji State at 10:00 a.m. and Post at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday.
