CLERMONT, Fla. – The Concord University softball team split its final two games in Florida as it took down Bemidji State, 9-1, but fell 1-0 to Post Tuesday afternoon.
The Mountain Lions are now 8-6-1 on the season.
Game 1: Concord 9 – Bemidji State 1 (Five Innings)
The Mountain Lions plated four first-inning runs and never looked back as they need just five innings to down BSU.
CU was able to load the bases to start the first inning before sophomore utility
Skylar Jenkins drew a walk to bring home sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson. With the bases still full, Concord was aggressive as freshman catcher/outfielder
Jolie Privett's fielder's choice scored three runs after the Beavers committed an error.
Thompson and twin sister, sophomore third baseman/outfielder
Sarah Thompson, combined for the next run in the second inning. After L. Thompson's one-out single, S. Thompson tripled to give Concord a 5-0 lead. Senior utility
Jenna Witt punctuated the inning by tallying her seventh home run of the season.
Staked out to a 7-0 lead, L. Thompson made quick work of the Bemidji State in the circle as she allowed just one run on three hits and struck out a career-best 13 to move to 2-2 on the season. The only outs that weren't strikeouts on the afternoon for Thompson was a first-inning popup and a second-inning groundout.
A two-RBI single from senior second baseman/outfielder
Amber Stokes in the fifth inning ended the contest early.
In addition to dazzling in the circle, Thompson was 3-for-3 with two runs scored at the plate. S. Thompson added two more hits
Game 2: Post 1 – Concord 0
Freshman pitcher/outfielder
Josie Brewer was sharp in the circle for Concord, but was outdueled by the Post tandem of Bridget Betley and Demi Rivera.
Brewer retired 10 of the first 11 batters she faced in the game before a one-out home run in the fourth inning gave the Eagles a 1-0 edge.
After Betley went four innings for PU, Rivera stepped in to try to record the final nine outs. It appeared the Mountain Lions would tie or take the lead in the top of the sixth.
Stokes and junior outfielder
Dani Bloomingdale drew back-to-back walks before junior catcher/utility
Kaitlyn Stewart reached on an infield single to load the bases. However, confusion in the count led to a caught stealing at home, and a strikeout looking to end the CU rally.
The Mountain Lions were unable to get a batter aboard in the seventh as they were clipped.
Brewer scattered six hits and struck out two in a complete-game effort. Five different Concord players accounted for one hit each.
Concord starts Mountain East Conference play 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Charleston.
